Lake Langisjór in the middle of the Icelandic highlands is a bit of a mystery. It is one of the largest natural lakes in the country, but difficult to see unless you travel to the edge of the water or climb a nearby mountain. Because of its great distance from the shore, no one throughout history has travelled this deep into the highlands or ever written about this lake until it was discovered in the mid-19th century.

The lake is 20 kilometres long and only 2 kilometres wide, hence the name Langisjór ("The Long Sea"). Long mountain ranges rise on both sides of the lake. This picture was taken during a hike along the beautiful lake. The sun shone briefly between the horizon and the higher clouds, resulting in an incredible sunset.
